September (2016) was a notable month in the history of Kratom in the US. During this month, the DEA expressed its intention to place a national kratom ban, by putting kratom under schedule-1 substances.
This resulted in widespread opposition from kratom supporters, store owners, and many key administrators. After seeing the strong backlash from people regular buyers of kratom capsules and powder, the DEA backed off.
As a result of this incident, Kratom became even more popular than before. After all, it was the talk of the town, everywhere. And because of this, more kratom stores popped up after DEA indefinitely delayed its intent.

So, is kratom legal in the US? apart from these states? Well, the short answer would be yes. However, some jurisdictions still have limitations. For instance, the jurisdiction of San Diego does not allow the sale/purchase of kratom while it is legal in the rest of California.
As for the kratom ban itself, it seems like putting a national ban is far more complex than it sounds. After all, a big number of stores rely on kratom for sale, to earn a livelihood now. Hence, a full kratom ban seems unlikely.
